4.1Expert Score
Absolutely pleased
I was excited to get the PowerSmart Lawn Mower Battery Powered with Bag, 17 Inch 23-in-1 with 40V 4.0Ah Lithium-ion Battery and Charger as my gas powered lawn mower had quit running and I had to send it to the shop. I have been thinking about an electric powered mower for a while so I decided to give this a try. FIRST – it is small. My other mower has 21 inches or so of mowing size. This is 17 inches and it takes a lot more trips across your lawn to cut the same grass. This also means the grass catcher is small and so you have to empty it more often. SECOND – it is flimsy. It doesn’t feel well made and I worry how long this will last. Everything feels like a toy instead of a well-built lawn care tool that will last decades (like my other mower, which cost $46 to tune up and have running fine again, hopefully for another decade).

Not much power and the battery takes too long to cool down.

I was thrilled to have this coming in. Finally a 40V mower. No fooling with gas and oil or that pull starting. I am way too old to be pull starting anymore. It came in and I immediately put the battery on charge. Not bad. It took about 2 hours but it was the first charge so I didn’t think it would be an issue. It came assembled except the usual. Put the back chute or side chute on flip the handles up. There are two bolts that are not on most mowers and clips to hold the wire to the handle.Once the battery was fully charged I put that in along with the safety key.You need to push in the power button then while holding that in, pull up on one of the grips. That starts the mower. My son was ready to video but I didn’t like the sound it was making. The motor was going up high, then down low. We figured out this must be a load sensing. Maybe to save the battery.Note: My lawn was not in need of cutting so this should have been an easy test for it. It struggled. Any grass higher than 3 inches it bogged and you had to slow way down.I only got about 150′ mowed and the grass catcher was full. I figured out that wasn’t going to work for me, so I switched to the side chute. That did better but still too slow. I don’t have a big front yard, maybe 80 foot square. It only cut half of that before the battery died. That was exactly 1/2 hour.I took it in and put it on the charger. The charger has a visual alarm (red and green lights flashing at the same time), to tell you the battery is too hot to charge. I put it in front of a fan for 30 minutes. Still too hot…..an hour…still too hot. It has now been two hours and it’s after dark so I will try again tomorrow. Very disappointing. So it ended up taking 2.5 to be able to charge again. Today it again ran 30 minutes. Plus the little flap to keep the grass from coming out of the back fell off over and over so I just got rid of that. Now I am back into waiting for the battery to cool down again. So far I believe that this might work if you have a small city yard and keep it cut low. For a country yard, it just will not work. Plus having only one battery leaves you out of luck if you do need to go further. For a normal yard, I can’t recommend this mower. I see the price has dropped 25 dollars since I ordered it. That would help a little. I know there are much cheaper ones out there but there are also ones much higher.Again, if you have a small yard this may still work for you.

Not solid, feels like a toy or a trimming mower!!

I was excited to get the PowerSmart Lawn Mower Battery Powered with Bag, 17 Inch 3-in-1 with 40V 4.0Ah Lithium-ion Battery and Charger as my gas powered lawn mower had quit running and I had to send it to the shop. I have been thinking about an electric powered mower for a while so I decided to give this a try.FIRST – it is small. My other mower has 21 inches or so of mowing size. This is 17 inches and it takes a lot more trips across your lawn to cut the same grass. This also means the grass catcher is small and so you have to empty it more often.SECOND – it is flimsy. It doesn’t feel well made and I worry how long this will last. Everything feels like a toy instead of a well-built lawn care tool that will last decades (like my other mower, which cost $46 to tune up and have running fine again, hopefully for another decade).Third, it came with some minor problems which I have illustrated and hopefully will help you if you buy it.The square “nuts” which hold the handle down had fallen out of place and into the box. Make sure you don’t throw them away accidentally. I found them and it is easy to put them in place. I added pictures to show where they go, just slide them into place and when you tighten the handle, they won’t come out again. Also, be careful how you open the lid to put the battery in place. I felt like it should be the dark colored piece that lifts, but it is NOT. You want to lift the entire lid or top of the mower as shown.Inside there is a slot for the battery.THAT IS NOT ENOUGH. There is also a red plastic piece that must be put in place as a safety to enable the mower.THEN you can turn on the blade with the relatively complicated buttons at the top of the handle. Just follow the written instructions and that works fine.MOWING – at first I wasn’t sure about the motor, but I had it adjusted at 1 inch as it came from the factory. CHANGE THAT to 2inches-3inches in most cases. It could NOT handle cutting that low and bogged down. At 2 1/2 inches it was fine. The MOTOR SEEMS GOOD. The body of the unit feels flimsy. I did not try the grass catcher, I don’t typically use one. So I just mulched. It mows pretty well. Being flimsy though, it is easy to scalp parts of your yard if you are not careful.OVERALL: 3 stars. I think this could be an ok trimming mower for where you need to get into small spaces, or a very small yard. But I’ll still be using my larger, more solid gas mower most of the time. I would only recommend it at a lower price and for limited use. It is nice to just turn it on with no yanking on a handle or smelly, loud gas – but that’s about it.ALSO: It isn’t as quiet as I expected. Not like a gas mower, but not silent either!
