Serious edger for serious homeowners
Seeing some of the reviews complaining about difficult assembly, plastic parts, etc, I initially hesitated to purchase. Otherwise the specs looked like what i needed, and I know my way around the shop, so I bought it.However, this machine meets all my expectations. The only assembly is 6 bolts to attach the handle, and 2 smaller bolts to attach the throttle. Oiling a B&S engine is always a little awkward, but that is just the way they are made. Really guys, if you want a coffee maker, don’t buy an edger. Its not that hard. The frame, wheels, and blade assembly are strong, with positive adjustments for depth of cut and angle of cut (up to 90 degrees). Although the B&S engine is heavy, the unit is well balanced on its wheels. Curves with any frame and wheel edger require some maneuvering, and this one is no different. No worse, no better. There is plenty of torque for my heavy clay soil with St Augustine grass. If you are edging 1/10th of an acre of bluegrass, this one might be overkill, but if you need a real edger for tough conditions, this unit fills the bill.

Explain to me why a simple edger has to cost $600?!!!
I have a tendency to research WAY too much, and take too long to make a decision. The same was true on my quest for a good, reliable edger. I was sick of replacing broken string on my crappy craftsman electric trimmer/edger.I researched every edger I could find, and there is nothing but complaints about low power, crappy carburetors, and failure after a year or two, or even a use or two. I finally figured I’d suck it up, stop trying to find a super deal, and take a chance on McLane. There were a small percentage of bad reviews, but mostly 5 star or close to it.Right out of the box, the control rod was missing. Kudos to McLane customer service for shipping one out in a few days, though not confidence inducing. Easy to assemble, but once it was put together, it looks as if the whole frame is crooked—the two frame pieces that the unit sits on, to which the handle bars attach, seem to be bent, so when you look at it straight on (from behind), the handle bars are actually turned slightly to the left. Wondering if my unit got dropped or smashed at some point during shipment (although the box wasn’t really damaged—a few small dents and holes)?Started up fine. Edges well, but only on FULL power. If you pull the throttle down to low, not only will it not cut, it will shut off the engine. I’ve used it a total of three times, and it seems to be harder to start each time, with more smoke bellowing out upon startup, and longer wait time for the blade to actually start spinning (Note: there was a review from a gentleman who sounded like he knows his stuff, commenting on the belt, and where it’s attached to the engine). I’m nervous that the belt is going to fail fairly soon because it takes a while for it to engage/start spinning the blade after start up.Also after the third use, the little rubber stopper/blocker behind the blade (to keep debris from being shot back towards the user) broke off, from simply dragging across the grass as I was edging. And now my ankles get pelted with debris—kind of a safety hazard.REALLY? I only paid about $400 for a new Honda lawnmower (less for my old Craftsman lawnmower) and they last for years and years, and start up first pull, season after season. Isn’t a lawnmower a much more complex machine than a simple gas edger? I can’t believe I paid SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS to have a few nicely trimmed lines along my short sidewalks and driveway. Why can’t someone make an affordable edger that works, and lasts? At this price, you’d be better off buying 2 or 3 of the cheaper $200 models from Home Depot and they’d last as long as this one, probably.
