I live in a place where we mow our lawn all year and bought this mower a year ago. The machine itself is solid – it mows the lawn well. The problem is the batteries – and this problem is huge. Buried in the depths of the manual is a warning – the batteries do not have a charge management circuit, neither on the battery nor the charger. This missing circuit – which is common in almost all modern battery charging – means that you have to watch your batteries when they charge and immediately remove them when they are full. Fail to do this and the batteries rapidly and permanently lose their ability to hold a charge. How severe is this problem? Well, we have a moderately sized yard, about 1,500 feet of grass. For the first two times we moved, the mower easily finished the job with charge to spare.

Exceeded my expectations – see my video for some info that I would have liked

I have uploaded a video running thru a few things that would have helped me make my decision. Sorry for the shaking and needing to keep it short for file size.I fully recommend this mower without any hesitation. I added some cons but do not read too much into them, just to balance the review out.Pros:-cut quality-solid construction. it is a 'real' mower and not a battery operated scaled down toy.-bagging is exceptional, very little grass left on lawn, no clumps, has not clogged even when wet, easy to empty-self propelled is intended to be an assist when you exert pressure on the spring loaded lever. it works well but a little slower than I would prefer.-battery life is good in my opinion. I estimate between 8k-10k square feet for the 2 batteries when cutting a thick lawn with a mix of flat and hilly surfaces. I use the power drive quite a bit and my lawn is thick so my battery life provides ~8-10k sqft which I am pleased with.-pretty quiet and super easy to operate-you do not smell like gas or fumes so it will change the way you cut as you do not stink after cutting. I now cut sections in between my conference calls. nice to get out into the yard for 15-20 minute clips without stinking like a gas and exhaust.Cons (I am being picky with these just to have some things listed to provide info):-no external battery level indicator. when the batteries run out it just stops without warning-drive speed a bit slower than I would like but well worth having-confusing 40v battery branding. they have various names for their 40v batteries but per greenwork's site they state that any 40v battery works is any 40v tool. I know other reviewers have contradicted this point so look for yourself.-when using the power drive the rear wheels will temporarily lock until you manually push an inch or so to release and allow them to pivot/roll independently. not an issue once you understand it and use it a few times.tip: allow hot batteries to cool before charging, charging while hot is destructive to their longevity.I am very happy with the price.I fully recommend.

Oh no, it won't go.

For the first two times we moved, the mower easily finished the job with charge to spare. The third time we ran out juice before we finished the yard. A year later and the batteries last about 100-150 linear feet.Replacement batteries cost around $125 each and come with the same charging issue – miss taking them off the charger once and you'll ruin the battery permanently.Try to imagine another device in your life that is ruined if you leave it on the charger overnight. Doubt you can think of one, and that's why Greenworks cutting costs by removing a charging management circuit is baffling – unless of course that's part of their strategy to sell more batteries.Having used this machine for a year, we're now switching to a different, well known, brand that features batteries that work in all our power tools. In summary: If you don't mind watching your batteries like a hawk while they charge, this mower will work for you. Otherwise, find a different brand.
