Nice light-duty trimmer. Comparison to Dewalt.
I used this Black & Decker LST136W 40V Max Lithium String Trimmer for a while before deciding to upgrade to the DEWALT DCST990H1 Max XR String Trimmer. Here is a comparison of the two without taking price into account.POWER-Dewalt is a beast of a trimmer. It is able to power through thick blackberry vines and densely-packed, tall, reedy grasses.-B&D doesn’t have the power to easily mow down heavy thick brush but works very well for lawn grasses and moderate weeds.ERGONOMICS-Dewalt is difficult to control due to its length and enormous battery pack. You really need a lot of arm and core body strength to be able to use this tool in a controlled manner.-B&D is lightweight, well-balanced and easy to use for anybody.PRECISION-Dewalt is so big and tough to control that you won’t have much accuracy with your trimming. It’s made to destroy everything in sight.-B&D allows you to make much more precise cuts which is good if you are working around small trees, vegetable bushes, or flowers.BATTERY-Dewalt 6 amp battery is HUGE and heavy but totally worth it if you need the extra runtime (>1hr) at high power.-B&D battery is about a third the size of the Dewalt and only lasts about 10-15 minutes on high power level. On low to medium level, the B&D will last about an hour with intermittent use. Low-medium is strong enough for standard trimming tasks like lawn grasses and small weeds.SAFETY-Dewalt violently sprays particles everywhere because of its power and its tiny guard. Expect to get your legs blasted with vegetable matter. I routinely get stuff sprayed into my face. You will want to wear tough, long pants and safety glasses at a minimum.-The B&D sprays stuff too but you don’t need to get armored up to use it.STRING MANAGEMENT-B&D has a big edge here because pre-wound spools are available. This means easy replacement and no concerns about knotted or crossed lines.-Dewalt string can be a pain to deal with. I have been trimming with the Dewalt weekly and lately almost every session requires me to deal with a string issue of some kind. You must replace the string yourself which is cumbersome and takes practice. The string is stiff and not that malleable which means is difficult to wind it neatly without crossed lines or knots.OVERALL-Get the Dewalt if you live in the country or need to power through thick brush regularly.-Get the B&D if you just need to do general-purpose trimming tasks on a suburban or city lot.

I cannot tell you how much I wanted to love this thing
I cannot tell you how much I wanted to love this thing. Alas, it stinks. Really. I live on one-third or so of an acre in the ‘burbs. The first time I used it, I went through one entire spool of string. I returned it to Amazon because I thought the feeder must’ve been broken. Nope. Got the new one and one spool lasted about 1.5 uses. No, I’m not doing big, deep woods brush; I’m just doing light grass trimming around my mailbox and sidewalk. I recently purchased a non-B&D (generic brand) roll of spool on Amazon to see if that would help. Nope. Did as good of a job (FYI), but lasted one trip around the yard. Today, less than 2 years after owning this thing, I noticed my battery charger is broken. Sigh.My previous B&D trimmer lasted about 10 years. The only reason I replaced it with this one is because the battery (about the size of a small toaster and twice as heavy) needed to be replaced. One spool of string would last me 2 or 3 MONTHS on that one. It’s no surprise B&D makes their money on the spools of string; it’s just stupid they’ve reengineered their once amazing trimmers to blow through a spool in 20-30 minutes.If you have a LST136 where a spool lasts you more than 30 minutes, congrats. This thing has great power, is so light, and I’d give it 5 stars if it didn’t shred string.B&D – I doubt you care or will ever read this, but please make a product you care about that actually does a good job and doesn’t take your customers to the cleaners (& by “cleaners” I mean sending us here to Amazon once a month to buy non-B&D string).
